Q: cetirizine?
I have a bottle of cetirizine that was prescribed in Feb, can it still be used now or does it go off?
A: It should be fine. They last for more than a year.
Q: Is it safe/ok to take Diphenhydramine and Cetirizine within 24 hours of each other?
I take the Nytol sleeping aid (active ingredient: Diphenhydramine hydrochloride 25mg) daily. I have been prescribed Cetirizine (antihistamine) 10mg to take daily. I took one earlier and am wondering if its ok to take the Nytol as well since they're both antihistamines.
Any doctors/med students?
A: Won't kill you or anything; will likely just make you a little drowsy. Zyrtec itself barely crosses the blood-brain barrier, so the additive effect should be minor.
Q: Are cetirizine or pheniramine maleate tablets safe during breastfeeding?
I have developed urticaria (hives) as a reaction to food colour, and I am breasfeeding. Are cetirizine or pheniramine maleate safe?
A: Category B which means safe, but consider risk vs benefit. Also do not take it unless your MD gave you the ok.
Q: is it ok to take hydroxyzine and cetirizine together? hydroxyzine at night and cetirizine in the morning?
i was prescribed hydroxyzine for a rash on my skin that has developed (probably from contact with poison oak) and that just seems to knock me out at night. In the morning my grandmother gave me some cetirizine which is also used for allergies, but im not sure of the health effects of having both drugs in one's system. If you know anything about it, please share some information with me. Cheers!
A: Your best (and safest) bet would be to ask a pharmacist if there are any interactions listed between the drugs you're wanting to take. Doctors and pharmacists both have access to a database of drug and supplement interactions and they can tell you quickly if you can safely take them together or not.... anyone here will just have a best guess from searching on the internet (which isn't always accurate, as we all know) ;-) Good luck!
Q: Is generic Cetirizine HCL as effective as Zyrtec? Does it have different side effects?
I've been taking Zyrtec year-round for years but am losing my insurance coverage. I can get 350 of the generic for about $17 but the best I can do on Zyrtec is 75 for $31!
A: Cetirizine is just as effective as Zyrtec. The side effect profile is the same. Generic drugs undergo the same scrutiny as brand name drugs when they come onto the market.
Q: What is the difference between loratadine and cetirizine dihydrochloride?
I've tried using both for my allergies. It says one is used to treat symptoms but loratadine is used to treat the whole allergy. Are there any other more effective choices that aren't too expensive?
A: Loratadine is Claritin and cetirizine is Zyrtec. They are both anti-allergy medication. They both treat the whole allergy. They are in a class called the anti-histamines. These medications are your best bet. Clarinex is another one, but it's no more effective than Claritin or Zyrtec. Just make sure you drink plenty of fluids when you take them, because they can dry you out a little. If the allergies keep up, go see your doctor.
Q: What hayfever compound is better, loratadine or cetirizine hydrochloride?
I'm starting to get hayfever and dont know which ones are better. Any help please?
Thanks
A: In general, they are equally as effective. People (and their allergens) respond to medications differently, so it really just depends on you. Try one of them and if you don't like it, try the other. They both take a couple days to give their full effect, so don't give up after one day. In case you did not know, loratidine is the generic name for Claritin and cetirizine is the generic name for Zyrtec. They are both supposed to be non-drowsy antihistamines, but honestly Zyrtec made me tired. Having learned how the drugs actually work, that makes no sense because they are really supposed to work in approximately the same way and not cause drowsiness, but for some reason I was drowsy when I took it. That is the only thing I could say about one being better than the other. Loratidine might be less expensive, I know the generic has been on the market for a while now, and Cetirizine only became generic within the past couple years. I think you should go with whatever is cheapest. Good luck!
Q: Is Cetirizine good for children with asthma and running nose?
My child of 7 years has just been prescribed Citirizine, an antihistaminic, to control her running nose, she also suffers from asthma and takes inhalers daily. Can anyone please tell me how good and bad Cetirizine is? what are the major side effects? what is the recommended dose for a child of 7? Thanks for answer
A: Cetirizine is one of the antihistamines are used to relieve or prevent the symptoms of hay fever and other types of allergy. They work by preventing the effects of a substance called histamine, which is produced by the body. Histamine can cause itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. Also, in some persons histamine can close up the bronchial tubes (air passages of the lungs) and make breathing difficult.
Before Using This Medicine
In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For antihistamines, the following should be considered:
Children—Serious side effects, such as convulsions (seizures), are more likely to occur in younger patients and would be of greater risk to infants than to older children or adults. In general, children are more sensitive to the effects of antihistamines. Also, nightmares or unusual excitement, nervousness, restlessness, or irritability may be more likely to occur in children.
Please see the web pages for more details on Cetirizine.
Q: Loratadine makes me drowsy, should I try cetirizine?
I've tried takting loratadine for my pollen allergies, it works but I get very drowsy in the afternoon (even though I take it in the morning). It's so bad that I have trouble concentrating on my work.
I've read that loratadine is supposed to be the antihistamine that don't make you drowsy and that cetirizine is actually worse. Is there any use for me to try it anyway to see if it's better?
A: Antihistamines in order of least to worst sedating:
Loratadine
Fexofenadine
Cetirizine
Benadryl
People are different, so you may not find Cetirizine sedating.
Have you tried something like a nasal steroid spray? This can be just as effective, with fewer side effects.
Q: Is it ok to take cetirizine (an antihistamine) for sleep?
I heard taking diphenhydramine for sleep and its ok, but I can't buy it outta here. Got only cetirizine.
Both are H1 antihistamines but diphenhydramine seem to have shorter half-life time, and well, they are kinda diffirent, so I dunno...
Also curious about the dosage, thanks. :)
[And dont advice me going to doctor or natural remedies.]
A: Cetirizine is not sedating so it wont help, Promethazine is sedating but has a long half life so you will feel tired the next day, Chlorphenamine is slightly sedating.
Q: Can I Give My Dog Zyrtec Or Cetirizine HCL For Her Allergies?
I know that you can give them 25mg diphenhydramine, such as Benadryl, but I was wondering if Zyrtec or a store brand that's active ingredient is Cetiriaine will do the same thing, since it's 10mg.
A: Zyrtek was actually tested on dogs (I HATE animal testing...)
Below I have a website that shows the results of a study done and a website where someone else asked the question, and other responded that they had given their pets zyrtek or a generic version.
Though most say you can give them up to 2 10mg tablets a day, I would suggest giving your dog 1/2 or 1/4 of that depending on weight. Zyrtek is made for people age 6+, so since pets are much smaller, I would say that after calling a local vet to try with a smaller dose or use childrens zyrtek.
Q: Can I use Alavert (Loratadine) and Zyrtec (Cetirizine hydrochloride) at the same time?
The labeling does not warn against it, and they are two different active ingredients. Is it safe to use both of these at the same time? Please help. My allergies are really bad today and Alavert isn't working.
A: I suggest you call up your local pharmacy and just ask them. They are usually very friendly and will help you.
Q: what other antihistamine has the same ingredients as Zyrtec - cetirizine hydrochloride?
is there a generic brand?
A: Cerirzine Hydrocholoride is the Generic name.
According to Drugs.com: http://www.drugs.com/pdr/cetirizine-hydrochloride-pseudoephedrine-hydrochloride.html
"Cetirizine hydrochloride, Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride = Generic name: Cetirizine hydrochloride, Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride
Brand names: Zyrtec-D"
