Q: Is weight gain a guarantee on asthma drugs/prednisone?
I've had bad asthma unfortunately and I can't seem to shake it off completely so I take lots of drugs for it including prednisone at emergency times, but I take it in small doses usually 10mgs, at most 20, but recently I took a 60 mg dose.
Are all of these drugs including the prednisone going to ensure me of weight gain?
Thanks.
A: Most of the asthma drugs don't cause weight gain, but those containing steroids do make weight gain more likely. Steroids of all types (including prednisone and inhaled steroids) tend to increase appetite. So, you can control weight gain by minimizing calories. The other thing prednisone will do is cause water retention. As long as you only take prednisone periodically, rather than constantly, the water weight will not persist. Be sure and drink plenty of water while taking prednisone to minimize water retention.
Q: What are the risks of overdosing on asthma drugs and pain killers?
i some times do so would like to know
A: Overuse of asthma inhalers can raise heart rates to unsafe levels. Pain killers can repress for respirtory drive and cause you to stop breathing all together. Best of luck smarty!
Q: Is there a ZPG agenda to prescribe asthma drugs to people with pulmonary fibrosis ?
A: It would seem that if they had a secret agenda, none of us would know it, so the question will only run in circles in any non-biased answers' head. I am inclined not believe in conspiracy theories myself, but I will not rule it out.
Q: Can drugs CAUSE asthma? Like can using them make you get asthma?
What is a cause of asthma? Can drugs be the cause of it? If so, which drugs? Or is it not related to drug use?
Just a note: I'm NOT the one taking drugs. I'm just trying to see if there are signs that a family member is because they're acting loopy and now apparently have asthma.
A: Most cases of asthma is because of genetic or atopic. If someone in family have eczema or rhinitis, there is higher tendency of another family member to get asthma compared to normal population. Asthma can also be cause by occupation, mostly due to dusty work. But, there are many factors that can exacerbate asthma attack such as pets, carpets, exercise, work, stress, dusty environment, cold or foods. It's depend on individuals. Each individuals get asthma attacks because of different causes but drugs can and will cause asthma attack in all asthma sufferer. If you don't have asthma before, you don't have to worry about getting it but for asthmatic person, they better avoid it. The drug is beta blocker such as propanolol, atenolol and so on. Because, this drug will stimulates constriction of bronchus in person with asthma. But, to normal person with no asthma previously, it won't cause anything to bronchus.
Q: How can I control my asthma naturally without using drugs?
I’ve suffered with asthma since childhood. I’ve convinced that it can’t be cured. I’ve learned to live with it but I’m sick of using inhalers and taking medication. Are there any safe and effective natural treatments for asthma that will control attacks and breathing without the use of drugs or inhalers?
A: A long time friend of mine has had asthma since she was a child. She battles with it to this day. I did a little research online and I found an article of a woman telling her story on how she controls her asthma condition naturally.
In the article she talks about changing her diet, eliminating preservatives and simply eating more healthy overall. She stopped consuming diary products. She then went on to limit or completely stop taking her medications that often had bad side effects. It seems like the combination of diet, exercise and cutting off medications contributed to her controlling her asthma naturally.
If you can identify what causing your asthma attacks, you can change your lifestyle and your asthma should improve. My friend, for example, eats what she wants, doesn’t exercise…there’s no wonder that she suffers from frequent asthma attacks! She’s very dependent on her medication and simply suffers even more from the side effects.
I think it’s great that you desire controlling your asthma naturally. I hope I’ve been of some help. You can read more of the woman’s story in the article which also includes professional advice from doctor. I’m going to email my stubborn girlfriend the article.
Q: Would it cause any further damage to my lungs if I dealt with my asthma without drugs?
I thinking I want to stop taking my asthma meds(not really a fan of meds) and just deal with naturally.
I have been an athlete my whole life...
A: The best non medication treatment for asthma is to learn your triggers and avoid those triggers. If you do that you shouldn't have any attacks. It some cases you can't avoid the triggers or can't identify them. That's when you need to use medications.
Would it cause any further damage to your lungs? Well if you were still having flair up and not using your medications, then yes. Re occurring flair ups of airway inflammation can cause airway scaring. Little scars inside your "windpipe". Once these are there, they will not go away and they will cause an obstruction of air flow. The larger the scar the more of an obstruction there is.
If you avoid your triggers, and do not have any flair ups, you shouldn't have to use any medications and there shouldn't be any damage.
Keep in mind, anyone diagnosed with asthma should have a rescue inhaler (like albuterol) with them at all times.
Good luck

Q: what is the good cure for asthma?Must take a drugs or doing breathing exercise?
Some says sniffing ganja or drinking a beer can cure asthma?is that true?
A: The herbal remedy lobelia works great. one 50mg dose in the morning and one at night works great for me. Also get a nebulizer or breathing machine they cost about 80 bucks without insurance or free if you do have insurance try it out.
Q: Which drugs are the most effective for stopping/reversing Asthma?
Which drugs are the most effective at not just treating it shortterm, but really helping reverse the symptoms, so you can go about your day not feeling the effects of Asthma?
Also tell me a bit about how they actually work.
Also since Asthma can kill, how does it actually kill? By closing airways 100%? is that possible?
won't your body panic and release epineprhine/fight/flight chemicals, and open them up?
A: Asthma is a chronic condition... so there are no meds to cure it. But, asthma can also be related to age (eg; childhood only... outgrown by early adulthood and then adult asthma: no symptoms until adulthood) and then there are just plain asthmatics.
There are tons of meds... most are used in combination. Some people take oral steroids (like prednisone) some take inhaled steroids (Pulmicort) some take Advair (combo drug with a B2 agonist and steroid) some do mini-neb tx with Albuterol. the combos are endless and it just depends on how bad your asthma is, what triggers it and what makes it worse.
Asthma can kill because the airway (trachea) becomes so constricted that it actually closes and the lungs become so irritated that air cannot be exchanged. The body will go into "fight or flight" mode, but releasing epinephrine does not open the airway. The cells of the airway need to be relaxed and "uninflammed" to allow proper air exchange. Wheezing turns in to stridor and becomes very rapid and then the person cannot breathe at all. This is a very frightening thing, because they know exactly what is going on around them.
Here is a link to a site that might be better able to answer your question. Good Luck
Q: What are the STRONGEST drugs/treatments for asthma/lung function conditions?
I mean the absolute strongest bunch, or most effective you can get? Are there any surgeries that might help too? Getting your tonsils removed maybe? Anything?
thanks.
A: removing the tonsils & adenoids can improve your lung capacity -your PFT results will demonstrate this. you need the best med for you. i've answered your other questions well -get a referral to the lung specialist. your questions are all valid & important, but it sounds like your doc isn't treating the asthma effectively. people die from asthma symptoms every day, so take it seriously and start taking charge of your health. you'll feel better doing this.
Q: Asthma drugs , and sports...What do YOU know?
First of all I just wanna say thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this ....Well i'm 17 had asthma since i was born and have been playing , soccer and ice hockey since i was 6, recently i have been doing alot of research on asthma and trying to educate myself. One thing I have noticed is that alot of the drugs can have long termeffects on your body. Personally when i was younger I never took any prevenitive medication just a couple puffs here and there when I needed, but in the winter time i would have sitituations where I can barely breath and have been token to the hospital put on a mask , given injections or given pills . However the last few summers ive played on the provincial soccer team and we train pretty hard through out the year, So I have myself in pretty good shape through out the summer , However what im looking for is Consistency.....the thing is ive seen a couple doctors, actually saw one last week, and this is the doctor that had me on the pill singular through out last summer and had give me a advair and said take that when ever i needed. The thing is I found that advair is not something you just take every now and then and is something people take consistently to control there asthma.... Tho I found with advair I would get major muscle cramps and constant highs and lows in mood instead of feeling neutral or relaxed.
So in conclusion im wondering what causes my asthma to be worst during hockey season, also it is said that physical activity strengthens the lungs but if you are taking a puffer during physical activity how are u strengthening your lungs, doesnt that mean your body is depending on the drug more than your physical ability, Also the doctor had me on the drug avamys for my sinus and i toke it for 10 days but when i stopped taking it my asthma randomly started acting up and my sinuses just went clogged agn.
A: You have to look at what asthma is, asthma is not about muscle tone. Asthma is either constriction of the airway (bronchspasm) or inflammation of the airway, or both. Puffers (bronchodilators) help relax the constriction, steroids help the inflammation.
Cold air can be a trigger for asthma, in fact cold air is sometimes use to screen for asthma, in a controlled setting.
best thing for you is to see a pulmonologist or someone who specializes in asthma or asthma education. My recommendation is to try to get a long acting bronchodilator and use this at least 15-20 minutes BEFORE participating in hockey or any cold-related activity. You might also try to find a mask that goes around your mouth, i've seen them made for skiers, this will capture the heat and moisture of your face and the exhaled air so that it will warm the air you inhale. I dont know if you would be allowed to wear this during a game or not.
Q: Is a cellulite lotion which contains the asthma drug, aminophylline safe to use?
WILL THIS DRUG, EVEN IF USED TOPICALLY CAUSE A PERSON TO HAVE BREATHING PROBLEMS, ASTHMA, ETC. WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
A: A very small amount of theophylline is absorbed by rubbing it on the thighs and unless you are allergic to the rest of the ingredients in the preparation, you should not have a problem. Typically it is used to reverse the symptoms of asthma when it is inhaled as a Rx aerosol. I never have understood how rubbing anything ion the skin can reduce the amount of fat contained adipose cells.
Q: Does prolonged use of asthma drugs cause like, mental retardation?? or hv some psychological effect?
I'm tryna get a reason for my sister's attitude. she's had asthma for 15 years
A: Not to my knowledge. What does she take? Check the side effects...
Could just be girls being girls...
