Q: Can using Spiriva make you gain a weight or keep you from losing it even if you eat properly and excercise?
My wife gained over 45lbs after quitting smoking. She eats healthy and excercises regularly. But she is not losing any weight. Can Spiriva be the cause?
A: I take Spiriva and have for quite a while. I am 5'5", 110 pounds. Spiriva did not cause me to gain any weight at all.
Q: I need information about deaths related to spiriva?
I have just heard about some deaths related to spiriva. My mother passed away in January of 2006 and was taking this medication for c.o.p.d. Any documented evidence I can recieve would be very helpful.
A: Spiriva hasn't caused any deaths to my knowledge. There is potential for Spiriva to cause death if someone were to use it as a rescue medication, which it is definitely not. Inappropriate use of any medication can result in harm or death.
COPD can result in death because it is a chronic and progressive disease that decreases the patient's lung function and makes it significantly harder to breathe as the disease progresses.
I have treated an end-stage COPD patient who could only manage an oxygen saturation of 75% on a non-rebreather mask. That was the best we could do for him because he didn't want to go on a ventilator and we know there is nothing we can do to help him even if he is on a ventilator. COPD is like that. The person with it just fades away over a period of years, getting increasingly sick, going on home oxygen, taking all sorts of respiratory medications, and very likely ending-up in the hospital for their last days. We really can't do anything except keep their home medications and oxygen settings going, nursing would manage pain control, if it were needed.
Spiriva is a good drug. Unless you are allergic to something that composes it, you should be fine. I take Spiriva for my asthma and it hasn't caused me any problems in the two months I have been taking it. It doesn't do much, but takes the edge off my shortness of breath when I'm going up stairs.
Q: I just swallowed a Spiriva by accident and it says do not swallow, what should I do?
I mean total accident, I took my other meds with water, and I was about to put that thing into the inhaler, I swallowed it... I got a very important presentation in school today, but I mean it say don't swallow... Should I call 911? My doctor? Or its just a precaution? Anyone know?
#2 no need to be a bitch... I have no medical experience, and was worried, ok...
A: I accidentally did the same thing, there were no adverse effects, they tell you not to swallow it because you will waste the capsule, it cannot relieve your COPD if it is in your gut not your lungs. Go to your presentation, good luck.
Q: What song is used in the SPIRIVA commercial?
the song with the cool violin part.. what's the name of it?
[or maybe the first few notes if anyone plays by ear and can give those]
thanks
[or if someone has that shazam app from the iphone] ;)
A: Yes, it's violin and some kind of synth. I have looked for it everywhere, and the one thing i found was that the people at Primary Elements have done previous music for them. Maybe you can find it.

Q: What other inhaler can substitute in spiriva?
A: matt and masters property are both correct.
Matt's point of spiriva (tiotropium bromide) being the same as Atrovent (ipratropium bromide) is mostly true. They are in the same anticholinergic drug class.
Master's Property's point of spiriva being in its own class is also true because it is the only anticholinergic drug that is long acting and last for up to 24 hours per dose (one 18mcg capsule). Atrovent lasts about 6-8 hours so you would have to take it more often. Also Spiriva is in powder form and Atrovent is an aerosol.
Good Luck with your meds and have a great day.
Q: Emergency! What should I do, I swallowed a Spiriva inhalation powder capsule?
This is a tiotropium bromide powder that is in a capsule. I take alot of medications, and I was holding it in my hand to put in the inhaler, and I just forgot, and threw it in my mouth and swallowed!
A: Don't worry about it. Acute intoxication by inadvertent oral ingestion of SPIRIVA capsules is unlikely since it is not well-absorbed systemically. You could have read this off of the packet and had an answer much sooner!
Q: Asthma Question Advair to Spiriva Inhaler...How long untill you feel better?
I switched from Advair to Advair to Spiriva Inhaler 5 days ago. I do not feel any better. My symptoms have worsened. How long until I should feel better? My doctor says be patient, but ordered chest x-rays just to be safe. What is your experience with Advair versus Spiriva?
Thanks for your concern. I am blessed with naturally low blood pressure; but Doc checks blood pressure, etc, etc every 2 weeks during medication changes.
A: It may take a week or two for you to notice the Spiriva having an effect. If you see your doctor (or go to your pharmacy and talk to the pharmacist) show him or her how you're using the inhaler, just to be sure you're using it correctly. Most of the time if people aren't seeing an effect with their inhaled medications, it's because they are not using them right (if they've been using them for at least 2 weeks, that is!) You can still use your albuterol (or other short-acting beta 2 agonist) to relieve your symptoms if they are preventing you from doing your daily activities.
I'm not really sure why your doctor prescribed you Spiriva though... typically it's reserved for treatment of COPD (or at least it's more effective in preventing exacerbations of COPD than asthma).
Q: What is the other substitute for spiriva?
A: Spiriva(tiotropium bromide) and Atrovent(ipatropium bromide) are antimuscarinic agent, which are often referred to as an anticholinergic. The Spiriva is a long acting where as the Atrovent is short acting. You would have to take the Atrovent more frequently.Hope this helps:)
Q: Can Spiriva be prescribed/used to manage Exercise Induced Asthma?
I am currently using Singulair and keep my inhaler handy, but I've seen Spiriva at work - my Mom has COPD, and it's an absolute wonder drug in my opinion.
A: since this is for alternatives, I will offer something safer than drugs for you and your mother. look at the info on my page.
Q: is it ok to take spiriva and advair?
I have copd and pulmanary friborious ,advair 2 times daily spiriva once in between seems like a lot to me I don't normanally take meds except vits.. and dilantain
A: spiriva is to be taken once daily...this is also known as atrovent or ipratropium bromide, what this is is a long term bronchodilator. these helps to keep your airways open so that breathing is easier through the day!
Advair, which is a combo of two drugs: flovent and serevent.
These two drugs are completely ok to take together.
If I were you I would get up of a morning take both the spiriva and advair....dont forget to rinse your mouth after the advair. it can cause horrible thrush in your mouth.
then at the end of the day or evening take another dose of your advair, and rinse.
just an fyi about the advair....the serevent in the advair is a bronchodilator and the flovent is the steroid.
with the pulmonary fibrosis i am surprised you dont have another inhaler maybe "albuterol" or a nebulizer machine that nebulizes albuterol or xopenex. these are typically taken 2-4 times daily as well. they are extremely beneficial to a patient that has difficulty breathing due to COPD and pulmonary fibrosis! if breathing becomes difficult immediately seek you physician for advice.
Good luck to ya honey!!
Q: Does anyone know the side effects of"Spiriva Handihaler"? My husband takes this and threw out the paper .?
I plan on going to the drug store and ask the pharmacist but thought maybe someone had used this.
A: As an anticholinergic drug, SPIRIVA (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder) may potentially worsen symptoms and signs associated with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia or bladder-neck obstruction and should be used with caution in patients with any of these conditions.
As a predominantly renally excreted drug, patients with moderate to severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance of ≤ 50 mL/min) treated with SPIRIVA should be monitored closely (see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY, Pharmacokinetics, Special Populations, Renally-impaired Patients).
Information for Patients
It is important for patients to understand how to correctly administer SPIRIVA capsules using the HandiHaler inhalation device (see Patient's Instructions for Use). SPIRIVA capsules should only be administered via the HandiHaler device and the HandiHaler device should not be used for administering other medications. The contents of SPIRIVA capsules are for oral inhalation only and must not be swallowed.
Capsules should always be stored in sealed blisters. Remove only one capsule immediately before use, or its effectiveness may be reduced. Additional capsules that are exposed to air (i.e., not intended for immediate use) should be discarded.
Eye pain or discomfort, blurred vision, visual halos or colored images in association with red eyes from conjunctival congestion and corneal edema may be signs of acute narrow-angle glaucoma. Should any of these signs and symptoms develop, consult a physician immediately. Miotic eye drops alone are not considered to be effective treatment.
Care must be taken not to allow the powder to enter into the eyes as this may cause blurring of vision and pupil dilation.
SPIRIVA HandiHaler is a once-daily maintenance bronchodilator and should not be used for immediate relief of breathing problems, i.e., as a rescue medication.
Q: COPD and Spiriva. Does it work for you?
I use Advair twice a day and my doctor gave me Spiriva to try. I am not sure if it even helps me. I always have a liittle wheeze if I breath deep. I was wondering if Spiriva works good for anyone. When I enhale it, it seems like enhalling air. When I use Advair at least I feel all that grainy medication.
A: I use Spiriva and Advair as well. Spiriva works great!! I know what you mean though about seeming like you are only inhaling air. Keep taking your dosages. Meds work faster and better when you take them the same time each day. Also my Dr. suggested that I use my spiriva med first wait a few minutes before taking the advair.
COPD sucks!!
Q: Why can't I cut the foil to extract a Spiriva capsule? My fingers are too weak to open the foil.?
A: When my hands are wet I have the same problem ... use a pocket knife or scissors to cut around the capsule, remove the capsule .. just be careful not to puncture the capsule.
Q: does anyone know who is prescribed spiriva asthma or c o p d?
it is important i need a straight answer there is pleny info but i have not saw it saying it is not for asthma so who is prescribed it or in other words would you be prescribed it if you never had c o p d
A: Spiriva or Tiotropium is a form of the drug Atrovent, and used commonly to treat asthma, COPD and many other forms of respiratory diseases. It is a well known and well used drug and is quite effective.
Normally the Spiriva (Tiotropium) capsules are given to people who smoke or have other reasons for not using an Atrovent nebuliser or inhaler, but Atrovent and Tiotropium are basically the same drug and do the same thing. And to answer your question, both are used for respiratory diseases of most forms.
I have asthma and a serious form of COPD, I take Tiotropium daily and Atrovent as well when I'm seriously ill.
