Q: How can I lower my high blood pressure without drugs/medications?
I don't want to spend the rest of my life on prescription medications so I need help in solving my problem by using only foods and vitamins. I'm not overweight and I do all the things I've been told would benefit my health, but what can I do "naturally"?
In my opinion most prescription drugs do more harm than good. Please help me!!
A: If you have a "high normal" pressure reading, you're in a great position to profit from the help that natural medicine can offer. By adopting the suggestions below, you'll probably be able to lower your pressure naturally and avoid medication entirely.
NATURAL TREATMENTS FOR HYPERTENSION:
If you are taking medication for hypertension, do not discontinue. Consult your physician, adopt the changes recommended here, and get a pressure reading two to three months later to see if your pressure has lowered and if you can reduce your medication.
If your pressure is "high normal," adopt the recommendations below and you will probably be able to avoid the use of medication entirely.
If you are overweight, lose weight. This change alone can sometimes lower your pressure into the normal range. Just five to ten pounds can make a difference.
Lower your fat intake.
Adopt as many relevant features of a Vegetarian diet as possible Including more polyunsaturated fat, fiber, vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium, calcium, and potassium (see recommendations below for vitamin/mineral doses), and reduce total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol.
Determine if you are salt sensitive. If sodium is affecting your blood pressure, eliminate it from your diet .
If you are salt sensitive and therefore must reduce sodium In your diet, increase your intake of potassium-rich foods such as peas, peppers, eggplant, and pears.
Adopt a high fiber diet. Try oat bran cereal, or some other high-fiber cereal, for breakfast.
Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grain cereals, breads, and pastas.
Do not take fiber supplements in connection with hypertension.
If you are not sodium sensitive, try eating three or four stalks of celery daily a week before a pressure reading to see if it helps. (Don't eat celery in extremely large amounts, as it can be toxic.)
If you drink alcohol, stop.
Adopt an exercise program. Exercise for a half hour three to four times weekly. A brisk walk is excellent.
Adopt a stress control program.
If you smoke, stop!
IN ADDITION TO YOUR DALLY SUPPLEMENTS, TAKE:
Calcium: 1,200 mg. of calcium at bedtime for a trial period of two months.
Magnesium: 250 mg. two or three times daily for a trial period of two months.
Coenzyme Q10: 30 mg. three times daily.
Garlic: Increase consumption of garlic and other foods in the onion family. You can try garlic supplements, available in health food stores. Take one 300-mg. long-acting, odor-free capsule daily.
Vitamin C: 1,000 mg. daily.

Q: How did you succesfully lower your blood pressure without the use of drugs?
I have slightly high blood pressure and am pregnant. I want to lower it naturally with change in diet, activity level, or natural supplements. What worked for you?
note: please don't tell me about drugs that are safe for pregnant women. I don't want to take any.
A: Lower your salt intake and exercise - Something low impact like walking since you are pregnant.
Q: Is it safe to stop taking High blood pressure drugs?
A: Some, like catapress, can cause extremely high blood pressure if you quit taking them - even if you weren't taking them for high blood pressure and have never had problems with it before. These should be gradually decreased to prevent the rebound hypertension. You should always consult your doctor when stopping these meds.
Q: Cholesterol/blood pressure drugs - take or no?
2 years ago I was a wopping 219 pounds at 5'8". My chol was 239 and I had high blood pressure. I was a mess. My doc put me on statins and cholesterol drugs. This brought my blood pressure down but it was still marginally high (190/90). The chol drugs brought my total chol down to 160s.
June 2007: I made changes in eating and added some exercise. By Sept, I had lost 25 pounds. I remained on the drugs as my bp dropped to 120/70 and my chol dropped to 142 total/39 hdl. I asked the doc if I could come off drugs, he recommended not to. So I dropped another 20 pounds (45 pounds total lost now) and 2 mos ago I stopped all drugs on my own. Recent chol tests have me at 181 total/47 hdl. So overall chol went up from 142 but so too did the GOOD cholesterol. My blood pressure has stayed consistantly normal at 120/70 without drugs. My cThe odds of me slipping back to old eating habits are slim, Im a changed man...
So, Looking for some votes: Go back to the drugs? Stay off? Get a new doctor?
A: As long as you keep track of your bp/cho readings you sound good to go. I wish I had the will power to have done that. Your Cholesterol is still under 200 and thats good as long as your good stuff went up too. Your bp is great. Keep up the good work. (and it is) Stay off but keep monitered
Q: When following a LOW CARB diet, how conterproductive is using blood pressure drugs and cholesterol drugs?
When folloing a low carb diet, how conterproductive is using Avalide which includes 12.5 mgs of diuretic in it and using crestor for cholesterol reduction? i have followed low carb diets with much success in the past. but this time around i lost about 15 lbs and stopped losing. the only difference is i am taking blood pressure and cholesterol medications
A: How long ago did you successfully use the Low Carb diet? Age can have a major effect on your metabolism. And judging from the drugs you are on - I would say you don't exercise much. If you are eating the same amounts as you did back then and are at the same activity level, then I would say your metabolism has naturally decreased over time. It is time to get back in the gym, and exercise (with your doctors approval) to boost your metabolism - it is something you should be doing anyways.
Q: whale on high blood pressure drugs can you play football or do somethin like that?
A: yes you should be able to do just about anything and everything you did before you started taking the meds
Q: lowering blood pressure without drugs?
For some reason, my blood pressure is quite high. I haven't changed my diet or the amount of exercise I take but it has increased significantly from seven years ago. Don't like taking drugs if I can help it, any ideas?
A: Hi there.
It can be controlled - I am doing so myself - but it isn't easy.
What I am doing is
a) I have upped my daily exercise to minimum 5 days a week
b) NEVER add salt to your food, nor buy processed foods with high levels of salt and/or sugar in them
c) reduce coffee drinking to 1 cup a day maximum
d) reduce sugar intake drastically
e) eat pasta and vegetables in place of chips and lots of bread.
f) cut out foods with additives and artificial colourings - E numbers are a complete no.
Got to tell you though, it is a hard path and as you get older you will have to stick with it. On the plus side, you will look and feel increasingly better.
Good luck, Steve.
Q: How does low blood pressure effect tolerance to drugs?
I have quite low blood pressure and i was wondering how this effects my tolerance to alcohol and drugs. I find alcohol effects me very quickly and i only need to drink a fraction of what everyone else is drinking or i end up pretty wasted. I wanted to know if there is a link there and if my blood pressure would mean i'd also be really sensitive to drugs weed DXM acid and PCP.
BTW This is for a health project, im not planning on doing anything stupid.
A: No...blood PRESSURE..pursay...has nothing to do with it. It is your genetic makeup of your blood structure.
Q: What foods or herbs or drugs quickly lower blood pressure?
I have hypertension and I'm on medication which along with watching certain dietary items controls it nicely. I know the things that cause high blood pressure and try to stay away from them, however sometimes I know it is up and was wondering if there is anything you can do to knock it back down. If there are so many things that instantly raise it, it seems like there should also be things that would instantly lower it.
A: cayenne (capsium)
Gota Kola
Gingko Bilboa
L-Argine
Q: What are some natural ways to control blood pressure?
Hi,
I am trying to find out natural ways to bring the blood pressure down. I have a friend who has just found out that their blood pressure is QUITE high, not just a few points.
The problem is that they have a history of not doing very well with drugs. Most of the drugs that the doctors have prescribed for various things throughout the years have not worked, or done just the opposite of what was supposed to happen. My friend thinks that their body chemistry is just different than the average and that drugs just don't work well for them.
Therefore, they are really scared to try taking any blood pressure drugs. I am trying to gather up some information to help them figure out what to do instead of drugs.
I know things like eating less salt, losing weight and stuff like that, but could you please point out some of the things that may not be so obvious? Also any herbs or something that is good for that?
Thank you for your help and I look forward to your responses!
