Q: Depression drugs?
I was wondering: -What are the common drugs perscribed to people suffering from depression? -Do these drugs have known side-affects (I'm especially concerned about long-term side-affects)? Thank you very much.

A: I took Zoloft for 18 months, even though at first I was very hesitant. I had no side effects at all! I came off them 12 months ago, and have never felt better!

Q: Depression Drugs?
Is ne one on lamictal or effexor? and how have they made u feel, and how did they help u deal with ur depression? i myself are on these and i need other peoples input.

A: My mom was on effexor... and all I can say is WATCH OUT!!! Effexor can be really addicting... she was taking the max dosage in high qualities... just follow the lable carefully... and rememeber NEVER TO TAKE MORE than it says! It will really make you off balence and almost bi-polar. It did help. And, you can also make yourself not-depressed. You just need to find something or someone to help. I know, I did it.

Q: What is a natural way to releave stress and depression without drugs or yoga?
Anti depression drugs are not for me. Neither is yoga, both make me sick to my stomach and dizzy.

A: any kind of physical activity will help with stress and depression. research has shown that physical activity actually changes the brains chemistry and alleviates severe symptoms of stress/anxiety/depression. it doesn't matter what kind of exercise or physical activity it is either. try to find one you enjoy doing and stick with it. speaking with a therapist is also beneficial in treating stress and depression and can be quite effective IF you find the right match in a therapist. this can be a daunting process and takes quite a commitment on your part to keep trying until you find the right match for you. Many people also find help in their religion. good question- I find for myself that humor is an extremely effective tool in helping alleviate these issues.

Q: What are some anti depression drugs that will not cause weight gain?
What are some anti depression drugs that will not cause weight gain?

A: I was initially prescribed Effexor and it caused me to eat more and gain weight because i was so euphoric from the meds. I talked to the doc and he switched me to Zoloft which doesn't seem to be as potent as the Effexor - it takes the depression edge off without the weight gain...at least for me. You might have to try them out to see what works best for your body chemistry. It can be a rollercoaster ride until you find what works....but it is worth it! I wish you the very best

Q: What is the good of anti-depression drugs?
Do you ever wonder why an anti-depression drug may cause thoughts of suicide? Well, I think it's because these poor people are going to be forced to take these drugs for the rest of their lives! Why don't doctors try to come up with something that works more long term to permanently restore the chemical imbalance?

A: It is unfortunate how misunderstood medications are. Most people who "know" the answer often think antidepressants are bad because a friend, family member, or they personally had a problem from antidepressants. Or from an episode of ER. The "follow the money" argument almost never works for anything. It is true that cash is a part of the picture but there is so much more. And it is not just the drug makers that make money- the therapists, the authors of self-help books, makers OTC "supplements, or "natural" cures all make a lot of cash. Even if you think drug companies are true evil the non pharmacological aspect also has money and lobbyists. From you question your second sentience starts "Well, I think....". Do you have studies to back it up? What makes you believe it is true? Firstly, aside from rare situations people are not forced to take medications. So no one is forcing anyone to do anything. That is a simple fact. Since you acknowledge that depression is a chemical imbalance (but it is a bit more complicated) and want drugs to fix it then you must believe it is a medical problem. Drugs are not perfect. The only things that "cure" are drugs that help fight off an infection for example, or correct an unusual problem that is typically acute. But most things from high blood pressure to depression requires daily medications. The reason is simple, the drugs (for most people) do fix the problem but drugs don't last forever. So once they are gone they don't help. It is like a wall, when it is up flood water, for example, can't get in but remove the wall and water crashes in. That is how things are, even natural things ware off. People taking Valerian have to keep taking it. Doctors have and continue to find a way to fix the problem, but it is not as simple as other things. And to an extent they are getting closer to understanding the chemistry and neurobiology behind depression. So they are trying. I don't wonder why antidepressants cause thoughts of suicide, I know why. Firstly the increased risk in suicidal thoughts and sometimes actions happen to people 24 and under. At what age to you think the human brain is fully developed? The answer- 24 years old (on average). That is very convenient and coincidental. So perhaps during brain development some people have problems. And most people don't take antidepressants for life. Many people have a single depressive episode, meaning that for some period of time depression occurred and then was gone. It can be a severe episode of depression so people ask for help, may take an antidepressant to help, but after some time the problem is corrected and it is not needed. Some people have a couple of episodes and take medication during each but no other time. It is the people with recurrent major depressive disorder that are advised to take medication for a long time because the problem never goes away. And for those that take antidepressants most do get better and have few, if any, side effects. Would you rather people suffer than take a continuous treatment. Even organ transplant patients take medications afterwords for ever. We think of a new organ as a cure but drugs are still needed to stay healthy and to make sure the immune system does not destroy the organ. And the "habituation" and "addiction" argument is false, it is a fact. Words like addiction, habituation, and dependency are typically not understood. Antidepressants can cause some level of physical dependency. That just means the body changes a bit and problems occur unless the drug is stopped over time. Laxatives and many OTC nasal sprays cause physical dependency. But how many people are jonesing for a fix of Afrin nasal spray? But if it is slowly stopped there is no problem plus "discontinuation syndrome" occurs in a minority of people. Addiction and habituation is behavior not a physical thing like physical dependency is. People don't crave and abuse antidepressants like they do with heroin or cocaine. The reality is that antidepressants are not bad. It is a drug and like all drugs there can be side effects, including rarely occurring serious problems. The reason so many people that then it they are helpful. And since antidepressants are addictive they can stop. I have depression and I have taken about 12 antidepressants. When I took them I did become suicidal and on one occasion I attempted it. So even though antidepressants have done nothing but harm me I think they are helpful and I was a rare anomaly.

Q: Is it possible to resolve depression without drugs?
I am interested in readers experience of drugs versus therapy as the treatment for depression. In particular, I am interested in long-terms results of treatment /cure I am stunned to find so many people with such useful information. Thank you soooooooooo much, I am tearful because of your generosity!

A: Take the tablets and chuck them in the dustbin. Contact your local rambling club and find out when their next walk is. After just 20 minutes walking with them - whichever group you choose and no matter how shy or depressed you may be - you will feel a different person and suddenly you will remember how to smile again. The cost of this therapy is absolute zero. But it works - it really does. No matter who you are or what age you are. However, there are side effects that you should be aware of. 1: Walking with a group becomes highly addictive. 2: You will become fitter 3: Everyone will notice the difference in you and want to know the secret. Try it. You have nothing to lose.

For Prescription Drugs that Treat Depression: Like: Atenolol, Cymbalta, Effexor, Hydrocodone, Lexapro, Lipitor, Lisinopril, Lyrica, Mobic, Naproxen, Neurontin, Norvasc, Oxycodon, Paxil, Prednisone, Percocet, Prozac,OPAMAX, Tramadol, Zoloft, I was wondering, on average, how long does each dose last? How long does it actually "fight" depression? Thanks.

A: Concur with above author. The medications you mention are not generally regarded as "depression drugs" nor do they have much molecular similarity nor receptor affinity/pharmocokinetic nor pharmacodynamic properties. Would you kindly disambiguate your question? Thank you.

Q: How do I fight my depression without taking drugs for it??
My depression is getting to the point where I'm not myself anymore, I wear a mask to make others happy, but I'm so tired of pretending to be okay. When I'm not. Some people find out that it's a mask, but they don't try to do anything. I want to get better, but I don't need the side effects of prozac and zoloft, or whatever the drug may be. So my question is this: Are there any alternatives to fighting depression, besides drugs?

A: You don't need to wear a mask. Try to be around the people who can accept the fact that you are going through a hard time. There is nothing like having to be an actress on top of feeling really depressed. There are things that can really help with depression other than the pills. Nutrition can affect your mental well being. Try to eat a balanced healthy diet. No junk food, cut down of sugar... Eat lots of fresh vegetable, grains, beans... Omega fatty acid is amazing for depression, the brain. Add flax seed oil to your diet. one to two tablespoon a day. Vitamin B complex and B 12 are great for depression. Try your best to not aggravate your depression by drinking alcohol and smoking. Exercise is crucial. Try to go for walks in the nature where you can feel at peace, near the water, in the park... Give Yoga and meditation a chance. It will do you a world of good. If you can, try to volunteer so that you can get the focus off your depression and do something positive. At night try to take a hot bath, add few drops of lavender essential oil. It is very soothing. Try these methods for a month or so and hopefully you'll feel better. You can get well if you have the right attitude and determination. Good luck my friend.

Q: How effective are depression drugs and why do they make people suicidal?
just wanted some info on the experiments that the fda is letting happen to us

A: How effective are anti-depressants? That's a tough question because it varies. Not everyone reacts to them the same way. Some people say they get suicidal on them while others glorify them. Personally, I'm against them.

Q: I have to do a collage about lonliness, depression, drugs and alcohol?
Any pic suggestions for depression and lonliness?

A: maybe you could have like silhouettes of ppl standing alone?

Q: Why would you treat depression with drugs?
I understand that there are a very small number of people who's depression is completely linked to chemical imbalances. However, I have been depressed and it wasn't because some chemicals were messed up in my brain; it was because my life sucks. Why, if that's the case, would you want to use drugs to make somebody "happy"? I'd rather fix whatevers wrong in my life than have some stupid drugs pumping me full of emotions that aren't mine.

A: Medication can be used for reasons other then chemical. Consider a person who is so far down because of their life that they just can't pull themselves back up, they can't function because they dont see any point to it. Depression causes many reactions in the body and pain is one of them, sleep is also a very common escape for depression. My point, you have to get to the counsellor before you can get help, if you cant function to get yourself out of the house to the appointment then you will not get better. If you are in pain and constantly tired then you can not function. Medication can be used for a period of time to get you back on your feet. I guess I see things differntly, I see a legal way to feel a bit better before I can get to the place in my life where I can work on my issues. (my depression is both chemical and situational)

Q: How can the following drugs and diseases cause depression?
How can the following diseases cause depression: 1. pernicious anemia 2. hyperthyroidism 3. hypothyroidism How can the following drugs cause depression: 1. propanolol 2. corticosteroids 3. oral contraceptives 4. alcohol 5. isotretinoin

A: Any sort of anemia, pernicious or otherwise, can manifest as depression. You don't have enough blood cells in your body, so you end up feeling tired all the time. Hypothyroidism also results in a significant lack of energy, so can have similar results. I honestly don't know why hyperthyroidism can also result in depressive symptoms. It might be that patients have trouble sleeping or have problems with concentration and excessive psychomotor agitation. Propanolol slows your heart rate and decreases cardiac output. You basically get the same effect as with anemia--you just don't have the energy that you would otherwise. Corticosteroids can cause a number of psychiatric changes that are often lumped together under the umbrella of "steroid psychosis". This can include depression, mania, or overt psychosis. I don't think it is understood why this happens. Oral contraceptives are hormones. If someone can explain to me why hormones cause mood swings in women, I would be indebted to him. Alcohol is well-known to be a downer, but I don't think it is known how exactly it works. Some people argue that alcohol addiction is a *result* of depression, but I think the more common opinion is that it can be both a cause and effect. The evidence on isotretinoin is equivocal. The fact is that the group of patients who are most likely to be prescribed isotretinoin *already* have a higher risk of suicidality before they ever get the drug (the incidence of suicide is the same between kids who get isotretinoin for their acne and kids who get antibiotics for their acne). The reason isotretinoin is so tightly regulated now is because a Congressman's son committed suicide and the Congressman blamed the drug--but there really is no reliable evidence behind it.

Q: What are some good drugs for depression?
I have an appt on wednesday and I want to know what are some effective drugs to treat depression. I cant afford a counsler i am going to have to request a raise to pay for these meds

A: Your physician will make that decision based on your symptoms. There are several effective medications to treat depression in tricyclic family, SSRIs, and antipsychotics that are all effective in treating some forms of depression so that positive changes in a persons life may be made. Keep in mind, that what may work well for one person, may not work out so well for another. Annabell has a point in that medication isn't a quickfix. Originally the antidepressants were prescribed for short term use so that whatever was causing the depression could be dealt with, then the antidepressant weaned off. But that thought has gone out the window of late. Medication may be a quickfix for you, but then again, it may not be. Depends on your expectations and willingness to deal with causes. Blessings....... Do have your doc discuss side effects to watch for with whatever medication he has decided is right for you.
